‘Matis Motherhood’

The Matis are a tribe indigenous to the Javari Valley of Brazil whose discovery was as recent as the 1970s. In the 90s, sickness brought their population to fewer than 100 people, but fortunately, their numbers have rebounded to over 500.

I’ve taken many trips to this unbelievably remote area of the Amazon to spend time with them. Knowing what they’ve endured, images like this are even more special.
