‘Matis Motherhood’

The Matis are a tribe indigenous to the Javari Valley of Brazil, and their first contact was as recent as the mid-70s. In the 90s, sickness brought their population to fewer than 100 people, but fortunately, their numbers have rebounded to over 500.

I’ve taken many trips to this unbelievably remote area of the Amazon to spend time with them. Knowing what they’ve endured, images like this are even more special. One of my favorite things to do with the Matis is to walk the forest without any goal. They collect fruit, hunt monkeys, fish (using bows and arrows), harvest roots, sap, etc… I love watching how easily they make it look to thrive in one of the most inhospitable places on earth.
