It is here! Jeremy Cowart’s tutorial DVD “LIFEFINDER” is finally here!

Photographers, do yourself a favor.

- If you haven’t, go see Jeremy Cowart’s work.
- Watch the trailer below or HERE.
- Go HERE and buy.

The DVD website.

*Note for Trailer* I didn’t do the After Effects or color correction for this trailer. I did the rest. After Effects was done by Levi Bethune.  HE KILLED IT!
*Note for DVD* I didn’t shoot all the footage, only portions. I edited all the content and recorded all voice-overs. Color correction, After Effect, and DVD authoring was done by others.

This is a project I started back in May, yes May.  Jeremy Cowart and I sat down and discussed the idea of this dvd.  After meeting several times, we finally started shooting in mid June.  I spent weeks in LA shooting and editing over June and July.  The plan was to go home in early August for my b-day, then go to Nashville for a week to finalize what I had shot and edited, then back to Oklahoma before going to Africa at the end of August. Yeah, plans rarely work out as they were first developed.  I got to Nashville and finished what I had originally planned. At the end of the week Jeremy informed me of several hours of raw footage from past shoots he wanted to include in the DVD.  I left Nashville for a 3 day shoot in Seattle, then went straight back to Nashville where I’d spend a MONTH.  Then, no Oklahoma, no Africa.  A cluster of confusion and spontaneity that has become a normality in my life…. One of the many reasons I love my job.   Although it took over a month, I can’t tell you how much time we actually saved by having me edit in Nashville with Jeremy instead of editing from LA.  Just a quick shout and I could have Jeremy in the room ok’ing an edit.  No compression, uploading, emailing, waiting for notes, revising, then repeating.

I split my time in Nashville living with The Cowart’s and The Luck’s incl. Bethany.  Thank you all so much for opening your houses to me.  Giving me rides, cars to drive, keys, food, your energy, your time…I appreciate it so much.  Just talking about Nashville makes me miss it and everyone there.  That trip I made some incredible new friends and got to hang regularly with great people.

Thank you Jeremy for trusting me with your DVD project.  Honored brotha.

Anyways, “LIFEFINDER“  Check it out, spread the word, buy it, learn, and get better.

Radio Ink Magazine

posted in Photography, blog Thursday, November 18, 2010

Last month I got to shoot my first cover and feature story for Radio Ink Magazine.  No, not Rolling Stone….yet ; )
It is a small magazine most of you probably haven’t heard of.  Being honest, I hadn’t heard of the magazine until I got asked to shoot for it.
Regardless, I was pleased and ready to get the shoot underway!

Kevin Weatherly, the subject, was receiving an award in Radio, so I was asked to shoot the photos for his story.  Kevin hasn’t had a professional photo taken of him in years, and frankly doesn’t like getting photographed.  I believe I had just an hour with him to get as many different locations as possible.  Carson Daly was also supposed to be in a couple photos with Kevin. Problem was he literally had 5 minutes.  He had a meeting or something he was late for so he was in and out before I could blink.  The photo needed wasn’t very technical or difficult but it was still very important I had the location, lights, and camera settings right before we started.  I saw the magazine this week but don’t have a copy yet.  If my memory serves me correctly, here are some of the photos they used.

This is the cover photo.

Congrats Kevin!

Hawaii at 1500ft

posted in Photography, Travel, blog Wednesday, November 10, 2010

Hello everyone!

During the 2nd week of my Hawaii trip I began another job with the company “Tower Inspection.”  I have been working with them for years.  While it is probably the most odd photography gig I do, it is one of my favorite and most thrilling jobs.  They were needing a complete media update showcasing they work they do around the world. Working for Tower Inspection has sent me all over.  They work on military installations, used for air and sea communications for the Navy, Coast Guard, and Air Force.  Do to them needing to be near the ocean, once on top of these monstrous towers you have an incredible view.  The two towers I worked on in Oahu were 1500 ft, over a quarter mile high.  Myself accompanied by 3 or 4 others are hoisted up a small basket to the top.  The ride alone was enough to make my stomach churn.  The slow ascent, wind dancing the basket side to side, with a look over the edge that will make you swallow your stomach.  Once up top we have to rock the basket side to side(using a tow line) so we can get close enough to the tower to rope one of the beams and pull ourselves in.  Yes, that made things way worse.  One trip up consisted of about 20 minutes, just rocking in and out trying to hook on.  Soon as we got to the beam I am pretty sure I hugged onto the tower so I could hold on to some sort of foundation.  Oddly enough once I am on the tower shooting, I absolutely love it.  It is such a rush just hanging there, by a hook, looking down. On paper it is a simple shoot, in reality it’s one of my most difficult jobs to accomplish.  I have two cameras on, my ring-light on a lanyard and my heavy battery packed wrapped over my shoulder, not including all my chords all the lanyards and safety harness gear.  Holding the ring light out with one hand and trying to get my shot with the other, having to change settings, and make damn sure I don’t drop anything. All while hanging or balancing on a beam, have to be comfortable with being up that high and not actually holding onto the foundation.  Some of the days were rainy or too windy so we had to do some shooting on the ground.  Lastly, it’s a bit intimidating coming out and shooting a bunch of steel workers.  Not so typical where a photographer comes out and shadows them, shouting over the wind “Look at the camera! Can you move over to the other side of the tower! Say cheeeeese!” I will say every job I’ve worked on with Tower Inspection, the workers I have photographed have been very kind, helpful, and hilarious.  Shaking the basket on the way up is not a nice joke on the photographer. Luckily I brought two pair of undies ; ). Thanks guys, I appreciate you working with me and taking time from your busy schedules.  I look forward to more jobs with TI in the future.  Thanks.

I took several photos, but these were some of my favorite. Enjoy.

Panoramic I shot at the end.  Composed of 4 photos.

Sea Turtles

posted in Inspiration, Photography, Travel, Uncategorized, blog Friday, November 05, 2010

Hey everyone, it’s been a little while since I have posted what’s going on.  Recently I spent over a month in Tennessee working with Jeremy Cowart for a dvd he will be releasing very soon.  I went back to LA for a week, shot my first magazine cover, before I left for Oklahoma to shoot a music video for Van Risseghem.  I spent two weeks producing and shooting a music video for his single “The River.”  This project allowed me to get very creative, it will released later this month.  I flew back to LA, after the music video, for about 12 hours before I was on a flight to Hawaii to shoot Chuck and Katie Adame’s wedding.  I also contracted another job for Tower Inspection while in Oahu.  I am thankful God has been blessing me with work.  I can’t thank him enough.  Soon there will be tons of content for you guys to see.  Photos and Video!

This post I wanted to share with you one of my favorite experiences in a long time. In Hawaii for Chuck and Katie’s wedding we stayed at some condos on the North Shore.  What an amazing week with great friends! Chuck, Katie, Dave, Elvira, Red, Eddie, and the great people I met. We pretty much had a long stretch of beautiful beach all to ourselves.  While out walking along the beach you notice turtles popping their heads out of the water.  I never asked anyone why they come to this beach but I noticed they eat eat eat on the coral and rocks there. The beach gets very few visitors, so that could also be a reason the continue to show up.  Anyways, our room had snorkel gear and Chuck had an underwater casing for his little handy Canon camera.  I could’ve swam around with those turtles all day long.  I probably get more excited for experiences like this then most.  I absolutely love creation.  Several of my favorite experiences surround the wild and mother nature.  All I know is this year I am finally getting my Scuba Cert and underwater housing.  Here are a couple photos I snagged.

Update 10/8/10

posted in Photography, blog Friday, October 08, 2010

These are a couple images from shoots I have done the past two months.  More coming, just a couple for now.

With Alexis I was shooting with two lights and getting alright results.  Then I just sat back and noticed how much better the natural light hit her.  She has incredible glassy eyes.  I moved my soft-box as close to her face as possible, using it as a bounce.  The sun at her back gave her nice highlights and bouncing off the white soft-box just gave a beautiful reflection in her eyes..

With Sabina, I was just overflowing light in from a massive window.  I was using a light through the back door to blowout the back room and create a small rim light.  Without the flash it was just a black square.  Even though she was completely relaxed, her shoulder looks a bit awkward.  Besides that, I was very happy with the outcome.  I will always love some good natural source light when it’s available.

KISS

posted in Music, Photography, blog Monday, October 04, 2010

I was fortunate enough to be given a KISS photo pass at their show.  Seemed kind of surreal getting to shoot such a historical band like KISS.  From the get go I knew these photos were going to look the best.  This was my favorite set from Epicenter and one of my favorite sets to date.  I knew I only had two songs to get everything I needed, so I rushed around a ton. If any of you wonder why they give us a song limit, it’s so we aren’t standing in front of all the kids who have been waiting all day to see them.  We get a couple songs and then we leave.  Also some bands just don’t like photographers.  Hard to perform when you look down and have a sea of cameras and lenses in your face.  There is about a good 10 foot barrier between the stage and the crowd that all the photographers stand in.  Anyways, during the last moments of the 2nd song I noticed Gene Simmons look in my direction.  Then he proceeded to point directly at me.  I snapped about 5 photos before he looked away.  Immediately after, I felt someone tapping on my back.  I turned around and the guy behind me said “DUDE, PLEASE TELL ME YOU GOT THAT!”  I love when bands have fun and interact with everyone, including photographers.  Needless to say I was very stoked to capture that moment. Thanks!

30 Seconds To Mars

Here is the set from 30 Seconds To Mars.

I appreciate the fact they spend so much making their videos the highest quality.  Some of the most beautiful music videos I have ever seen come from 30 Seconds To Mars.  Love when a band actually gets visual and cinematic.

Before you look at my photos.  Please watch a video or all of them.  Serious inspiration.

Blink-182

posted in Music, Photography, Thoughts, blog Wednesday, September 29, 2010

Last weekend my buddy Scott Simock and I attended KROQ Epicenter 2010.  First, thank you again to the KROQ family for giving me the chance to see/photograph incredible bands.  You all freaking rule.  At Epicenter I got to see bands like Eminem, Big Boi, Rise Against, 30 Seconds to Mars, Against Me!, KISS, and of course Blink-182.  I had such an incredible time, despite it being 110 degrees and on black asphalt.  No humidity, just a blazing oven with thousands of crazed fans out to see their favorite artists.

A quick little back story.  Blink-182 was my favorite band growing up.  Anyone who really knows me will definitely know that.  Believe it or not they actually played a role in how I got into Film-making.  Video production was offered to me my Jr. year in high school and I said to myself…”I always wanted to learn how they did the cool camera tricks (photos turning to video, video turning to photo) in the Adam’s Song music video.”  Day one in video production I fell in love and have been pursuing it ever since.  Now I am not a little crazed “fan-boy” or anything,  I just really appreciate them for inspiring me into my career.  I definitely still love their music.

That being said, I was most excited about shooting/seeing them.  Oddly enough it was one of my least favorite sets of photographs.  Nothing due to the band, but due to the stage being so tall and the position of the event’s stage lighting.  I was getting mainly black backgrounds.  The front house spot lights just created a flat wash.  Enough excuses, I had 3 songs to shoot and I just didn’t come through. Hopefully this wont be my last time shooting them and I can supply them with some much better content next time around.

Big thanks to Blink-182 for the show.  Thank-you Aissa and Gus for coordinating and giving me a pass to shoot.

Summer

posted in Photography, Travel, blog Saturday, September 04, 2010

First I wanted to say sorry to everyone.  Things have been as crazy as ever for the past couple months.

I was in 3 car accidents, I got extremely ill for a couple weeks, and work had ceased.  All in all, it was just a very difficult time.
I booked a ticket home to Oklahoma just so I could go do some shooting.  Needed to get them bills paid!
Well plans never seem to happen the way you plan them.

I got to Oklahoma and then work started pouring in.  Jobs in and out of the country have come up.  Some are happening, some are not.
Some possibilities with a Television show & some possibilities with some music videos.  I have been in Tennessee for a couple weeks now, with a trip to Seattle in between.  With all the work coming in, I am seriously debating subletting my apartment in LA.  No need to pay for something I am not using.  I only packed a weeks worth of clothes and have now been gone a month.  It will be at least another week before I am able to go back to LA and other work may keep that from happening.

I have absolutely loved my time here in Nashville.  My friends and the people I have met here have made this trip amazing.  I have been here working relentlessly with Jeremy Cowart on his upcoming tutorial dvd.  I am very excited to wrap this project and get it to you all. I think it’s something that could definitely benefit all photographers.

There are so many things coming up and in the works.  I promise to have some more content/updates for you all soon. In the mean time, in Seattle, I took my first jab at shooting “implied nudity.”  I am very picky when it comes to this type of work. I wanted to be completely sure of what the final outcome should look like before I even asked my friend to shoot.  It was definitely a learning experience.  Here is my favorite.

Hope everyone is well.
