KROQ Round 1 – “On Air”

Recently I was asked to shoot a project for World Famous, 106.7 KROQ here in Los Angeles.  They wanted new photos of 15+ Joqs at the station.  Supposedly the last studio photos of them had been taken over 5 years ago.  I haven’t had a straight photo project in a while so I am very grateful for the opportunity.  I had listened to the station plenty, so I was so excited to get up there and meet all those voices I had gotten familiar with.

I spent a couple lengthy/crazy/incredible days up at KROQ shooting .  I hung out and chatted with Chuck, Kat, Sluggo, Alex, Katie, Nicole, Dave, Eddie….and the list keeps going….and going. By the end of the day my stomach was hurting from laughing.  I learned interesting things about squids, eating intestines, pool drains, alaska, and some other things that would make absolutely no sense if I mentioned on here…This job has been one of the funnest, hands down.  I have never met so many great personalities, esp working at the same place.  I enjoyed talking and hanging with every single person I met.  Thanks again guys for putting up with me and smiling bright for the camera!

I will post more shoots soon.  On white studio shots, individual photo shoots, loveline photos, polaroids, and The Morning Show group photos.  Many things coming so keep checking back.

Here are all the on air shots in order from the morning through evening.

Thanks again Chuck………for getting back to me after 8 months in your inbox.  I could’ve been in India by the time you came around.
Once again THANK YOU KROQ.  You have been an extreme pleasure to work for.  Looking forward to more shoots in the future.

Guam/Hawaii

Let me first briefly explain what these tower jobs are.  I always get asked, “Tower jobs? What?”  I would love to simply clear it up for everyone who has been asking.  It starts back when I was living in Muskogee, Oklahoma.  A man named Gary owned a local photo/print shop as well as President to a company called “Tower Inspection.”  I printed all my work at his shop so we quickly became aquatinted.  He enjoyed my work so he asked if I would be interested in documenting projects here and there that TI was involved with.  Initially, I thought….”What a random job.”  However I came to soon fall in love with it.  I had to get tower certified so I could climb these towers and photograph the employees on and around the towers.  I have mixed emotions about heights.  Sometimes it freaks me out, where as others I am absolutely loving it.  I only went on my first roller-coaster ride in 15 years, this past year, when I was succumbed to peer pressure from the great dudes in Relient K.  I even got nervous when I did my tower climb test.  The tower was only like 50ft.  It is weird just hanging off and letting the wind move you, nothing below your feet.

In Guam we stayed at the OKA towers, which had an amazing view all the way around.  The balcony wrapped halfway around the 14th floor.  It was unbelievable.  Some pics of the building.

View from room each night.

Each day after work. Balcony....beer.

Anyways, here are some photos from Hawaii and Guam.  The locations were, again, absolutely gorgeous.  The tower sites are always in beautiful places around the world.  No photos of the towers yet, however here are some random photos from the trip.  Wish the internet could do panoramics some justice.  Each one is MASSIVE.  Can’t wait to print some of them off.

Working in Hawaii

Cheese!

Thankful, thankful, thankful, extremely thankful every single day. I can’t stress that enough.
Tower photos coming soon.  Many more posts soon too.

Hope everyone is well,

These are some short 30 second teasers I did for the Relient K’s new album/documentary.  I just found out this past week they were actually posted!

I had such an incredible time spending over a month with those guys.  These outtakes are all REAL.  None of them were staged, and I didn’t tell them to say anything they say or mess up.  This all happened during interviews.  There will be several minutes of more outtake footage on the documentary.  Still waiting for that baby to release.  No idea at this point when it will.  Enjoy!

Teaser 2

One of the bestfunnesttalented groups I have ever had the honor to work with.  Miss you guys.

Head Bangers Ball

Last night at 2am central time, Head Bangers Ball was hosted by Dave Peters from Throwdown. During the segment they released 2 of 12 videos I had completed from Throwdown’s latest album “Deathless.”  First of all, if you haven’t picked up the album, please do so.  It is an incredible album I still find myself jamming to regardless of hearing the entire album hundreds of times, during the film process!  The videos were the first thing I have ever directed that hit national television.  Funny story…I didn’t even get to watch them.  Cable was not working at the house, it was an epic failure to say the least.  However, even knowing the videos were playing and being viewed my heart was racing.

With these films I wanted to say thank you to all of you who helped.  It isn’t enough just saying thank you.  We filmed the entire project in ONE week.  Some of you flew across the states and some of you drove for hours to be a part.  Some of you sacrificed a lot just to lend a hand and make my job that much easier.  I still shake my head in disbelief knowing how much we accomplished with our budget and time.  I learned so much from this project, not only about filming “whats the quickest way to get a dolly shot without a dolly”…but how much I truly love what I am blessed in doing daily.  How much I am surrounded with others who absolutely love what they do.  How to work under pressure.  How to stay positive and be productive when Mr. Worst Case Scenario comes knocking down your door.  We had a couple of those moments, but we still came out on top and had, what I consider, one of the best weeks of my life.

Scene 2 of 12

Due to time constraints, the episodes played on TV weren’t even color corrected.  Some other things were nixed as well due to it not meeting television standards.  I will let you all know when the finished versions are viewable!

Thanks to everyone who stayed up late to watch and for all your texts and messages of encouragement.  It was VERY inspiring.
The final videos will be out eventually but I just wanted to thank every again for all your help.

Throwdown, E1, and Ryan Downey, thank you for giving me the opportunity and taking on such a different project.  I will never forget it.

My dad told me this quote recently in light of this project….It couldn’t be any more true.
“Nothing is impossible for the man who doesn’t have to do it himself.”  -A. H. Weiler

I couldn’t have done it without so many of you.  Thanks.

Over Christmas break, I went out and did a quick small shoot of my great friend and very talented musician Brett Baggett.  He needed a few promo pics for his new project, so I was very happy to take them.  Brett is an intelligent young talent from Oklahoma who I have had the honor of knowing since 04.  Brett and his wife are two of my favorite people in the world.

We were out about 11am, which isn’t the best time to shoot, but it was very overcast so that was perfect.  It was about 20 degrees with a windchill of 10.  My fingers were the first thing to go.  Its the worst setting up gear and touching steel when your hands are frozen!  This was a simple set up. I only used an octabox and 10 degree honeycomb.  Used my new 16-35mm 2.8L.  I’m in love with the lens.

Interesting story about the shoot.    In the middle of our freezing cold shoot, we heard about 15 gun shots.  These shots were very loud hinting the shooting was not far from us.  Within minutes squad car after squad car made a perimeter around the block.  It had take place on the next street over!  Supposedly there was a gunman in his house just firing outside.  Thankfully no one was injured.  Always interesting times in Muskogee, Ok USA.

Hope everyone is doing well.

2009-2010

As the holidays pass and we launch a new year, I am reminded over and over how thankful I am to be doing what I love every day.  Traveling, opportunities, new friends, and new family made 2009 my best year yet.  I’ve realized my dreams become more and more realistic every passing moment.  I can only pray 2010 will be as rewarding and God will continue to open doors I thought were always locked.  Thank you to everyone for your support, loyalty, and kind words.  You lifted me up, you got me from point A to B, you let me crash on your couch, you drove me to the airport, you answered my questions, you put up with my sarcasm, you helped me on a project, but most of all,  YOU INSPIRED ME! It will not be forgotten.

I apologize for not posting much lately. I will fill you all in on everything very soon.  Great things in 2010!

I just simply wanted to say thank you and I will never take it for granted.
