DH Unplugged

posted in Music, blog, film Monday, June 21, 2010

Back in October of 2009 I shot some in studio stuff for Demon Hunter’s current album “The World Is A Thorn.”

Ryan Clark had an awesome last minute idea to do an acoustic unplugged set with Patrick Judge and Yogi Watts. We used Aaron Sprinkles studio to do the shoot.  A couple of difficulties since it was so last minute.
We didn’t have a master track for any of the acoustic songs they wanted to sing, so they freestyled each song 3 times a piece.  They picked the recording, for each song, that sounded the best and sent it off.

Only problem you have is 3 songs, 3 takes a piece, 1 camera man, and no master track.  So editing became difficult as every couple of seconds the timing would be off from the master track.  The biggest problem I ran into is Yogi changing up how he played drums.  Sometimes he would the ride, then the next take on the crash, and also changing fills.  You will catch editing mistakes here and there but I did best I could.  I really love how their heavy songs transition into acoustic tracks.  I was so happy to be working with them again.  They really are a talented amazing group of guys.

Stryker

posted in Photography, blog Thursday, June 17, 2010

When KROQ calls for a photoshoot, I really expect nothing less than to be photographing someone awesome.   Besides all the inside jokes and heckling I get, I must say I have enjoyed shooting and hanging with everyone on the KROQ staff.

The most recent in studio shoot was done for Stryker.  He is a DJ over at KROQ, but some of you may remember him from “Loveline” w/ Dr. Drew.  He has hosted several shows, acted in feature films, & was also formerly part of “The Ellen DeGeneres Show.”  Let’s just say Stryker is a hard working talented guy.  Thanks for letting me hang while you worked, I had a good time.

Paramore

posted in Music, Photography, Uncategorized, blog Thursday, June 10, 2010

Last weekend was KROQ WEENIE ROAST 2010!  It was one of my favorite events this past year.  Maybe it was the furry convention, the prom, great friends, running into T_BING or maybe it was just catching Hayley spit the biggest loogie ever.  Now I played baseball for 16 years…so i’ve seen my share of loogs.  Let’s just say she could’ve put them all to shame! Anyways, in the end it was a combination of everything this past weekend that made it so memorable.  Blessed to feel at home with KROQ and their incredible/hardworking staff.  They have been one of my favorite clients, hands down.

Paramore is excellent live.  So much energy and fun.  Here are my favorite from the set.  Btw, Jeremy, good seeing the surprised look when you saw me!
Will be posting more soon of other bands from Weenie Roast.

Mentawai BTS Short

posted in Photography, Travel, blog, film Wednesday, June 09, 2010

After almost 1 year, Joey spent last week losing sleep over editing this short doc. The result is a 17 minute piece  over our journey with The Mentawai.  The video seriously just zooms by. There is insight on our trip, the people, the culture, and some shooting with Joey. It is seriously a trip that I still can’t believe happened. There is so much more that went on but we will save that for next time. Joey, Will, and I are all wanting to venture back there soon and do something more in depth.

I am so pumped Vimeo “premiered” it on their HD page! It’s my first video they have picked to premier, so thank you Vimeo! It helped the 17 min video get near 20k plays in just 3 days of being online! Check it out sometime when you guys get a chance.

Earlier this year I posted a video of just visuals from the trip. Video below.

If you would like to read up in depth about the entire trip, with tons of photos, click the links below.

Haley F.

posted in Lighting, Photography, blog Wednesday, May 12, 2010

While I was home, Haley had contacted me about shooting some photos of her.  It was her 1st photo shoot she had ever done.  Starting out she was a bit stiff and I could tell she wasn’t very comfortable.  After shooting and talking for a little while she started loosening up.  We shot on location near 7mile road in Ft. Gibson, Ok.  About an hour into the shoot she, along with Aaron, had been eaten up by bugs.  Aaron Newberry is my good buddy, he assisted me on 2  shoots while I was home.  After we left, we both pulled several ticks off of us…..gross I know.  I still have some big bites on my legs from that shoot.  Guess it didn’t even matter that I had jeans on!

Thanks Haley for being a sport and thanks Aaron for holding my lights up.  Only falling 3 times on a shoot is considered a success ; ).  Here are my selected favorites from the shoot.

Coachella 2010

posted in Music, Photography, Uncategorized, blog Tuesday, May 04, 2010

A couple weeks back, I happily attended Coachella 2010.  It was absolutely incredible, to say the least.  There were so many incredible acts, I wish I could’ve caught more shows. I can never remember shooting so much in such a short period of time.  I shot around 75gigs of photos in 3 days. Only getting 3 songs per band, and battling tons of other photographers in each pit.  Sifting through thousands and thousands of images, below are a few of my favorite…Jay-Z photos not included in this post. Business Cards/Invisible Creature

posted in Art, blog Wednesday, April 28, 2010

Back in October when I was working on a project with my great friends Demon Hunter,  Ryan Clark and I discussed making some new business cards.  I wanted something simple and classy, yet complex enough for someone to remember it.  Also, something that let people creatively know I was into film and photography.  Well over at Invisible Creature in Seattle, creativity flows as much as it rains.  Ryan just went kind of nuts with my card and I couldn’t be more happy with the finished product.  The envelope holding my business card is black with my logo, also in black, embossed.  Even the writing on the actual business card is lightly embossed.

Down in the left corner is a little die cut box.  When the card is pulled out, it does a 360 around my head, just like a mini flip book.  The cards are also composed of 2 different pieces of paper glued together.  Not just one color on each side, but two individual pieces.  That way when the black side is embossed with my information, it doesn’t go through to the other side.  Boom, simple, tuxedo classy, and yet visually complex in design.  The mini stop animation implies my field of work.  Thank you very much Ryan.  I am excited to pass these around.  Everyone should do yourself a favor and go check out the work they do over there.  INVISIBLE CREATURE.

JAY-Z

posted in Inspiration, Music, Photography Tuesday, April 27, 2010

During Coachella 2010 I got to experience something I didn’t even imagine possible, for at least a while.  I got the opportunity to photograph one of my favorite musicians ever, JAY-Z.  It is weird how my heart started beating so fast during the countdown to his show.  It seriously seemed to count down slower and slower.  I checked both of my cameras constantly, making sure my settings were correct and unchanged.  Knowing I only had the 1st 3 songs to shoot, I made my rounds very fast and fought my way through the overcrowded photo pit.  My favorite image I captured(above) was actually taken during the 4th song.  The evil CSC rebel force security guards were invading the pit and exterminating the photographers out.  As I was leaving, I turned around and saw JAY-Z heading towards my side of the stage. So, like a Patrick Swayze in Red Dawn, I snuck past the security using the camouflage of retreating photographers, creeping up to the side of the stage.  I stood up just as JAY-Z started pointing to the crowd and I popped off about 5 more shots just before security noticed me and quickly apprehended me.  They put their hands in my lens, blocking my shot, making my powers useless.  As I walked out, proudly,  I roughly scrolled through my images and viewed the last batch. I screamed WOLVERIIINNN….. I mean, VICTORIOUSSSS!  I got very excited when I saw the above image, I just hoped once I got it blown up it would be in focus.  “Persistence”paid off and I walked away with my favorite live shot to date, defeating the tough CSC Security Staff.   Shooting that show has been a big highlight for me. Hopefully things will keep rolling and more unimaginable things will happen.  God is bigger than anything I can fathom.  I am truly thankful to have gotten that opportunity.   Big thanks to KROQ and Goldenvoice for getting me a photopass for Coachella.  Also big thanks to JAY-Z.  Several of the bigger bands called a last minute audible and 95% of the photographers weren’t allowed in the pit to shoot.  Thankfully JAY-Z was cool enough to let all photo pass photographers in the pit, as it was supposed to be. Out of the 300+ photos from his show, here are my favorite.  Hoping one day to actually do a set up shoot with him, however this will definitely do for now.
